From past few weeks, they are now using interactive doodles instead of good old static images. Last time, when Hubble Space Telescope celebrated it’s 20th anniversary, Google came up with a doodle with night sky which had option to see some information of few stars and galaxies when the mouse pointer hovered on it.

This time, Google is celebrating the 30th Anniversary of Pac-Man with a interactive classic pac-man doodle as it’s logo on the homepage! Head over to Google homepage and take a look!

Many bloggers often tend to add few images to their posts to grab the reader’s attention. Images are always effective to make your readers understand few things which you cannot express in words. Sometimes, your user may find them so useful or interesting, that they even like to share it with others on forum or their blog. But few people will just copy the direct image link for sharing instead of linking it to the post. While few others try to steal your images and it is called as bandwidth theft. Either way, it will start consuming more bandwidth on your hosting account. Also, they not just steal your bandwidth, but also your image’s search engine ranking. So you lose both traffic as well as bandwidth.

Solution?

There are many ways avoid images from being hotlinked, but on WordPress, there is an easiest way to do it with a bunch of other goodies. And that is by using a mighty plugin called “PictPocket“. So install the plugin from your wordpress’s inbuilt plugin installer or install it manually via FTP by download it.

What to do after installing?

Configuration:

After installing it, you can see the PictPocket in the left pane of wordpress admin panel at the bottom. Go to “Overview” and you see this:

Click on “Auto Configuration” button to configure the .htacess file.

Set the “Don’t Hotlink” image:

Create a image with message not to hotlink image (something like this) from your blog and upload it to your server and provide the URL in custom images under “Options” and save it.

What happens next?

After you do all those stuff, you are almost done. Now whenever someone hotlinks an image which is present on your wordpress’s “Uploads” folder in wp-content, you can see it in “Hotlinks” page of PictPocket with details like who has hotlinked with a link to the page containing your hotlinked image and a count with how many times your image has been viewed on the site where it has been hotlinked. Now you can block those sites where your images are being hotlinked.

Click to view large image.

PictPocket will then add those links to it’s blacklist and the your actual image which was hotlinked will be replaced with the image containing the message not to hotlink your images! Cool isn’t it?

That’s all. If you have any question, do let me know in the comment.

Although Facebook claims that it’s privacy settings have been beefed-up, one cannot trust it unless you get to see what’s actually happening in practical. Though Facebook offers you an option to take control over your privacy settings, it doesn’t suggest you to use important settings which might turn vulnerable to your account when neglected. And so to battle this issue, a third-party developer has come up with a solution to scan your account’s privacy settings and lets you to make necessary changes.

Adobe Dreamweaver CS4 is one of the favorite tool of trade for many web designers and web programmers. Being a WYSIWYG editor, it offers a luxury that no other editor does and performs equally good. Since Dreamweaver CS4 is a windows based app, most users who move on to linux find it hard to make a switch to other alternative open source editors mainly because of the rich features of Dreamweaver. Though there are good alternative editors that can be used to do many things that the dreamweaver can do, they never offer the comfort of Dreamweaver. So this tutorial teaches you how to install and run Adobe Dreamweaver CS4 on Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx.

Note: This tutorial is written based on actual processes done on Ubuntu 10.04. This tutorial can also be used to install Dreamweaver on other distros like Fedora and Mint etc.

Here’s how:

You need to have Wine installed on your Ubuntu. To find out how to install Wine, read this.

After completing the installation of Wine, download “wintricks” by typing this in your Terminal:
sudo wget http://www.kegel.com/wine/winetricks

In order to make Dreamweaver CS4 install successfully on your Ubuntu via Wine, you need to download and install few windows based dependencies. This is the reason why we downloaded winetricks in previous step. winetricks will download those dependencies with a simple command, making it easy to install those dependencies. Type:
sh winetricks msxml6 gdiplus gecko vcrun2005 ie6 dcom98
This will start downloading those dependencies and will run a setup program after each files are downloaded. Just install all those setups that it prompts you to do so. This might take time depending on the speed of your Internet.

Now download atmlib.dll file and move it to system32 folder in your Wine’s C:
wget http://www.noob2geek.com/wp-content/uploads/files/atmlib.dll

sudo mv atmlib.dll ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/
Or download it manually from here and copy paste it to Applications > Wine > Browse C: Drive > windows > system32

If everything goes perfect, it will ensure that your Wine is now ready to install Dreamweaver on it.

Pop-in your Adobe Dreamweaver CS4 CD/DVD and open the Terminal and change the path to your drive. Or better copy the installation files to your Documents folder and put it a another folder named Dreamweaver CS4.

cd Documents/Dreamweaver CS4

Now make sure the main setup file lies directly within Dreamweaver CS4 folder and run this command:

wine setup.exe

After installing, you can run it from Applications > Wine > Programs

Note: The name of the setup file may vary. It can be setup.exe or some other.

Important: If you already have Adobe Dreamweaver CS4 installed on your windows installation, skip Step 5 and run the Dreamweaver.exe file directly from the installed directory by browsing through the C: in wine.

That’s it. If you come across any problem during the process, do let me know in the comments.

Communication is one the greatest process which enables people to transfer information to someone whom you want to be keep informed. Though the means of communications have been evolved, there are times when you have no other way other than opting for good old method of leaving a sticky note to your friend, colleague or a relative. Sticky notes help transfer informations like to-do list or a message to someone who comes in to your place after sometime when you are away.

When it comes to blogging, if your blog has more than one administrator or writers, there will be a need to leave messages to your fellow admin/writers to send messages or a to-do list. WordPress being one of coolest blogging software, it has as loads of plugins in it’s arsenal to cram in additional features. And one such plugin is “WordPress Admin Notepad” which enables you to leave sticky notes to your fellow bloggers.

Install the plugin:

Install the plugin either automatically from plugin installer in your wordpress admin panel by searching “WordPress Admin Notepad” or install it manually via FTP by downloading it from here. After installing, activate it.

Configure and start using it:

Navigate to Settings > WordPress Admin Notepad

Now that you have WordPress Admin Notepad installed, you must make a small configuration to make it work and ofcourse leave a message to see how it works.

Here, the first thing you notice is a large text box where you can leave notes. And then plugin comes with couple of options to customize it the way you want it to work.

In the Options, you must enable “Current Saved State of Notepad?”. If this is not ticked, it won’t display the note in dashboard. Also, you can tick “Disable Notepad Toggle at top right corner?” if you want the note to be displayed in all the pages of admin panel. I don’t suggest using this feature, because it annoys you sooner or later. So it’s better to show it only in dashboard.

The “Permission to Notepad?” option gives you control over to which usergroup the notepad should appear. This comes handy if you don’t want your contributors or subscribers from peeking into your admin notes.

Now after configuring it once, you can start leaving notes in WordPress Admin Notepad. You must click on “Note” on top right corner of screen to bring in the box the enter text. You can immediately save the changes you made from there as well. And whenever your fellow admin or writer logins, they can see what your message.

That’s it.

We had earlier taught how to display random posts in WordPress without using any plugins. Now this short tutorial will teach you how to display recent/latest posts on your WordPress blog without using any plugin. Though there is a widget that display recent posts in your sidebar, it doesn’t let you display anywhere else you like to. Say for instance, if you want to display the recent posts in footer like the one below in this blog, you will have to use few lines of code along with few template tags. So let’s get started!

How to display recent posts in WordPress without using any plugins:

Login to your WordPress Dashboard and navigate to Appearance > Editor

Now decide where to display the recent posts. For instance if you want to display after single post, then open “single.php”

Paste this code where you want the recent posts to appear. (Don’t put it in any of the PHP loops).

<ul>
<?php
global $post;
$myposts = get_posts('numberposts=6&offset=1');
foreach($myposts as $post) :
setup_postdata($post);
?>
<li><a href="<?php the_permalink(); ?>"><?php the_title(); ?></a></li>
<?php endforeach; ?>
</ul>

Just in case if you want to customize the list, a small explanation might help:

In line 4, you can see numberposts=6. This will display 6 recent posts. You may increase or decrease the number as your wish. Then, offset=1 will exclude one latest post since we are displaying recent posts and not the latest posts. You can set it to zero to display as latest posts.

Update the file and you are done. Now it will display a list of recent posts in your single posts or wherever you place it.

As explained earlier about the basics of Google Webmaster tools over here, Google Webmaster tool is a great online tool for any webmaster with deep interest in SEO for enhancing the visibility of site on the search results. Now that you have read the introduction to Google Webmaster Tools, now it’s time to get started with it and start using it. Before you get to see and do stuffs over there, you must add your website and get it verified. So this short tutorial will teach you how to add a site to Google Webmaster Tools.

Adding a site to Google Webmaster Tools is really easy and can be done within two minutes. Getting verified is also easy but the time consumption depends on how quick you are at doing it.

Follow these steps to add a site to Google Webmaster Tools:

1. Login to your Google Webmaster Tools Account.
2. Click on “Add a site” button
3. Enter the URL of your site. (Such as: www.example.com)
4. Click on Continue button.

5. Now you need to get it verified using any of the three available methods. The three verification methods given to you are “Meta Tags”, “Upload an HTML” and “Add a DNS Record”
6. I suggest you to go for either Meta Tags or Upload an HTML method of verification.

If you choose, Meta Tag method, then copy the meta tag below, and paste it into your site’s home page. It should be pasted within <head> and </head> section

If you choose, Upload an HTML method, then download the verification file and upload it to your site and click on the confirmation link.

7. After you finish doing any of those method, click on “Verify” button to get it verified.

Do note that Google Webmaster Tools considers www.example.com and example.com as different sites. So don’t forget to add both the versions of your site. (with and without www). You can even add subdomains like, linux.example.com.

That’s it. Stay tuned other tutorials on how to use various other features of Google Webmaster Tools.

Beautiful Sunflowers

As everyone knows, WordPress is the god of blogging platforms, it lets you do many things which others can’t do. Image Caption feature was introduced in WordPress 2.6 and it comes really handy when you want to put a small description or a title of the image that you are using. This is just one among the countless features that wordpress has managed to include into it’s CMS. Sometimes, an image without a background and border might look beautiful, but not when you add a caption to it. So this tutorial teaches you about how to add a good looking background and border to your captioned images.

Before getting started, just have a look at the image below that illustrates how captioned image looks with and without background.

Image courtesy: angus clyne

Now that you got a clear picture of how it looks after adding a frame-like backround to the image caption, I bet you can’t resist to add it to your wordpress theme soon.

Adding this background is made possible with the help of few lines of CSS code. WordPress has a bunch of pre-defined CSS classes. One among them is the “wp-caption”. This class is generate whenever you add a caption to any image. By default, not all the WordPress themes contain necessary codes to dress up the wp-caption class. So to dress it up, we need to declare the class in the stylesheet and add the properties.

To add the code, follow the below steps:

1. Login to WordPress admin panel.
2. Navigate to Appearance > Editor
3. Add the below code in styesheet.css at the very bottom:

.wp-caption {
border: 1px solid #ddd;
text-align: center;
background-color: #f3f3f3;
padding-top: 4px;
margin: 10px;
-moz-border-radius: 3px;
-khtml-border-radius: 3px;
-webkit-border-radius: 3px;
border-radius: 3px;
}

.wp-caption img {
margin: 0;
padding: 0;
border: 0 none;
}

.wp-caption p.wp-caption-text {
font-size: 11px;
line-height: 17px;
padding: 0 4px 5px;
margin: 0;
}

4. Update the file and you are done. Now whenever you add a caption to your images, you get a beautiful frame-like background to your images.

Note: You cannot declare the class anything other than “wp-caption” since it is a pre-defined class by WordPress and has been built into the code.
